I was gonna post some other stuff tonight but my scanner is broken. So instead, here is a birthday card I made for Sid awhile ago. Nothing says happy birthday like a rodeo frog.

I just went through my blog archive and realized what a bad year 2008 was for me in an arty way. For some reason I thought I wanted to draw and paint more realistically. I think some alien leech must have slipped into my ear and controlled my brain. I can pin point the time when things really went down hill. It was when I had to paint realistic cars everyday. It was the most creatively numbing thing. I HATE drawing cars. If I ever am asked to do something like that again, I will probably quit and serve coffee until I find something NOT realistic and car related. I am now trying to fix the situation by watching Donald Duck and Looney Toons and ordering a ton of books with Mary Blair stuff in them. When I was a kid I loved how round, appealing, and colourful the Donald and Mickey shorts were. Looney Toons were on every Sunday night, and luckly my dad loves them as much as I do, so we watched them every week. (Actually, my dad still gets excited about those cartoons...he's a really good dad.) And I know that I loved the colours in Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella many years before I knew who Mary Blair was. So I am trying to overdose on those things I love.

Holy fucking shit am I glad that's over.

I love it when I have funny dreams. Last night I dreamt that I was helping out Superman because Bizzaro had stolen some crystals that were needed to save the Earth. On our way to get the crystals back, we stopped at a community centre to have lunch. We both got pulled pork sandwiches. I was mad because I really hate pork and won't eat it. Then I woke up, ready for Tuesday.

I should have known better than to colour something digitally outside of work....can never muster up the enthusiams to sit in front of the computer longer than I need to....hence the scribbliness. I may still do a marker versions of this guy.

this year I got a cintiq sized tax return. then my computer busted and so I got a new computer too. Andrzej was kind enough to spend all day building the new computer for me today and now all the new stuff is set up and it's bed time but I did a quick sketch just to make sure that my new stuff is all really cool.

my colleagues at work were kind enough to remind me that a cintiq will not make me a better drawer. I will try to keep that it mind.

These girls live in a barn, and spend their time pinching chickens and gossipping.
After months of using a cintique, the tablet is a little cumbersome. Therefore, I will now only be using real paints and pencils. (or copping out and using flat colours).

This week's topic was stupid.

I've been a bit forgetful this week, so these were pretty much done on the bus on the way home Monday night....and then I forgot to post them.

THe girl is based on what I remember of a character from the movie "Idiocracy", although I can't remember her name in the movie. It's not Chastity. If you haven't heard of/seen this movie, I would rent it from your local video store. It's a Mike Judege movie (Office Space, Beavis and Butthead), and it's hilarious. It's about a average guy who gets frozen and ends up 500 years in the future. Humanity has kept getting stupider because the smart people weren't having kids.

THere are theories that its' marketing buget was cut (by 20th Century Fox) because of it's anti corporate message ( Starbuck's is selling handjobs, Carl's Jr Burger's slogan is "Fuck you, I'm eating!" ...which probably isn't the best product placement for those companies.) Regardless of the reason, there were no t.v spots, trailers or press kits.

I recommend this movie.

This week's illustration. I hate rats. Especially sewer rats. I feel a little sick just thinking about them.
Also, I used to work in an animal lab (a friendly one... at a university... no cruel tests). I had to help clean out the rat cages sometimes. THey told me if you picked up the rats by their tail, the rats couldn't bite you. Wrong. The phobia started after that.

This week's animation class illustration was to design a character in the "Triplets of Belleville" style. I decided to caricature (sp?) Rembrandt because his nose kind of reminds me of the Mafia boss in the movie. Deep, I know. And yes, this pose/ colouring is ripped directly out one of his self portaits.

ok, I didn't go into school today because I figured I would finish up some stuff from home, and take care of some errands that I know I won't have time to do starting this week. Unfortunately, I left my stuff for layout at school, and finished everything else, so I tried colouring this sucker again. I don't think I made any development, from where I left off last time, but I don't have time/patience to do more.

Colouring is kind of boring. Unless it's with real paint, or something else fun like pastels, markers, pencil crayons, etc. Basically, anything but the computer.

This is the first weekly illustration for animation class. I was going to colour it, but I got lazy before I was half done, so maybe I'll do that some other time.
